
Malaysia will be well represented in the semi-finals stages of the Slovenia International badminton championships in Maribor with one singles and four doubles pairs in contention.
Malaysia will have two representatives in the women’s doubles semi-finals. Low Yeen Yuan-Valeree Siow were the star performers for Malaysia in the championships after they dismantled second seeds Alzbeta Basova-Michaela Fuchsova of the Czech Republic 21-17, 21-18 in their quarter-final tie.
The duo, who beat the Dutch pairing of Kirsten De Wit-Kelly Van Buiten 21-16, 21-13 earlier in the day, will now play Ukranians Mariia Stoliarenko-Yelyzaveta Zharka in the semi-finals. The Ukranian duo had ended the hopes of another Malaysian pair – Khor Jing Wen-Siti Nurshuhaini in the second round.
Chen Su Hui-Cheng Su Hin will take on third seeds Isabella Nielsen-Marie Louise Steffensen of Denmark in the other semi-finals.
The sisters defeated Mutiara Ayu Puspitasari-Ruzana Ruzana of Inodnesia 21-9, 21-7 in the second round before picking a 21-11, 21-16 win over Ukranians Polina Buhrova-Yana Sobko in the quarter-finals.
Siti Nurshuhaini put on a fighting display to upset eight seeded Vivien Sandorhazi of Hungari 15-21, 21-15, 21-13 in the women’s singles quarter-finals. Earlier, she defeated Italian Katharina Fink 21-15, 21-17 in the second round.
Siti, looking for her first international final, will be up against Indonesian Mutiara Ayu Puspitasari in the semi-finals.
In the men’s doubles, Beh Chun Meng-Goh Boon Zhe started the day with an upset 21-11, 21-9 win over fourth seeds Matej Hubacek-Vit Kulisek of the Czech Republic in the third round. They faced another Czech pair in the form of the unseeded Ondrej Kral-Adam Mendrek.
The Malaysian pair had a much tougher time against Kral-Mendrek, coming back from a first game loss to clinch a 19-21, 21-15, 21-11 win to qualify for the semi-finals.
Chun Meng-Boon Zhe face Indonesians Muh Putra Erwiansyah-Patra Harapan Rindorindo in the last four encounter later today.
Of the three Malaysian pairs in the mixed doubles quarter-finals, only Choong Hon Jian-Toh Ee Wei made it through to the semi-finals. The Malaysian duo defeated Denmarks’ Oscar Sunekaer-Metter Werge 21-18, 21-19 to book their places in the semi-finals.
