A win in the round of at the Austrian Open has ensured German Timo Boll of his place in the Grand Finals in Zhengzhou in December.
Boll booked his place after an impressive 11-5, 11-3, 11-7, 11-3 win over England’s Liam Pitchford. While Boll has cemented his place, it was not the same for South Korean Jeoung Youngsik, who lost to Brazil’s Hugo Calderano 9-11, 2,-11, 11-8, 16-18, 7-11.
The win has pushed Timo Boll with 444 points in the overall standings with opportunity to add more points if he wins again. Youngsik’s defeat sees his finish with 404 points ahead of Japan’s Jun Mizutani who was beaten by Pitchford in the opening round. Mizutani has 402 points and is in 15th spot in the overall standings.
In other matches, Hong Kong’s Wong Chun Ting upset sixth seeded Chinese Liang Jingkun 11-13, 11-8, 13-11, 12-10, 7-11, 9-11, 12-10). In another upset, Japan’s Koki Niwa upstaged seventh seeded Swed Mattias Falck 8-11, 11-5, 11-7, 16-14, 9-11, 11-9.
The biggest upset of te day was when China’s Zhao Zihao accounted for teammate and second seeded Lin Gaoyuan 5-11, 11-6, 6-11, 11-9, 12-10, 12-10.
There were also of upsets in the women’s singles as well.

Eleventh seeded Chinese He Zhoujia beat seventh seed Doo Hoi Kem of Hong Kong 11-3, 11-5, 11-9, 11-5.
Third seeded teenager MimaIto of Japan beat her teammate Hitomi Sato 11-3, 11-5, 11-4, 12-10, 11-1. The outcome ensured Zhuojia is now assured of a place in the Finals, she has 448 points while Sato finishes with 387 points.
Chinese Taipei’s Cheng I-Ching defeated Korean Jeon Jihee 11-9, 11-4, 11-9, 11-9 to strengthen her bid for a place in the Grand Finals. I-Ching has collected 395 points and may add to that total in the coming rounds.
In other matches China’s Gu Yuting and Qian Tianyi both emerged victorious. Yuting accounted for Germany’s Han Ying 11-3, 11-5, 11-9, 11-5 while Tianyi ended the hopes of the host nation whe she beat Sofia Polcanova 10-12, 11-3, 11-7, 11-8, 6-11, 11-9. Japan’s Hina Hayata beat Korea Republic’s Suh Hyowon, 10th seed 11-5, 11-8, 11-6, 11-4.
Meanwhile, in the men’s doubles, a quarter-final exit for Chinese Taipei’s Chen Chien-An and Chuang Chih-Yuan did not affect the pairs chase for a place in the Grand Finals.
The pair were forced to concede their anticipated meeting against top seeded Korean’s Jeoung Youngsik-Lee Sangsu.
They finish in eight spot in the standings to leapfrog teammates Jang Woojin-Lim Jonghoon.
Any slight hopes harboured by Poland’s Jakub Dyjas-Cédric Nuytnick and Austria’s Robert Gardos-Daniel Habesohn disappeared in the quarter-finals. Dyjas-Nuytnick lost to Germany’s Boll-Patrick Franziska 4-11. 11-6, 5-11, 6-11 while Gardos-Habesohn were beaten by Japan’s Masataka Morizono 4-11, 11-8, 9-11, 6-11.
The defeat experienced by Singapore’s Lin Ye-Yu Mengyu at the hands of Chinese Taipei’s Chen Szu-Yu-Cheng Hsien-Tzu allowed Hong Kong’s Ng Wing Nam-Minnie Soo Wai Yam qualify for the Grand Finals at eight spot with 176 point .
Lin Ye-Mengyu miss out on the Finals, ending up one rung below with 139 points.
The quarter-final clash between two Korean pairs where Cho Daeseong-Shin Yubin beat Lee Sangsu- Jihee in five games (9-11, 11-8, 8-11, 16-14, 11-8 saw the former qualifying for the Grand Finals.
