Ukranian Oleksiy Torokhtiy has been stripped of the Olympic gold medal he won at the 2012 London Games following a positive dope test.
The 33-year-old, who won the men’s 105kg weightlifting event, has also been suspended for a period of two years from all competitions.
Re-analysis of Torokhtiy’s samples from London 2012 resulted in a positive test for the prohibited substances Dehydrochlormethyltestosterone.
The IOC is currently conducting additional analyses on the samples collected from the Olympic Games London 2012. It was under this programme, which uses the latest scientific analysis methods to test samples for all substances prohibited in 2012, that Torokhtiy was outed.
The IOC delegated a selection of samples to be reanalysed and the results management to the International Testing Agency (ITA), and the ITA has thus brought forward these cases.
The notification sent by the ITA to the athletes concerned when initiating proceedings gives them the choice to have their case heard before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) or before an IOC Disciplinary Commission. This choice is given as the Anti-Doping Rules (ADR) for the Olympic Games London 2012 still apply for cases that arise from the current reanalyses.
The Ukranian has also been ordered to return the medal, diploma, and pin obtained in the men’s 105kg weightlifting.
The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) has been is requested to modify the results of the event accordingly and to consider any further action within its own competence.
This would mean that Iranian Navab Nassirshalai, who won the silver in London, is expected to upgraded to the gold medal status while Poland’s Bartlomiej Bonk to the silver.
The reanalysis programme for the samples from the Olympic Games London 2012 will continue in 2019 before the statute of limitations is reached by 2020.
