Former world and Olympic badminton champion Taufik Hidayat was summoned by the Indonesian Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) as the investigations into the misuse of the Indonesian National Olympic Committee (KONI) heats up.
This is the second time that the retired badminton superstar has been summoned by the KPK in relation the scandal that has already seen the resignation of the Sports Minister Imam Nahrawi.
Taufik, who could be one of the key witnesses in the scandal, was also questioned on his tasks and duties on August 1. He served as the sports ministry’s special staff and also as the deputy chair of the Indonesia Gold Program Executive Unit (Satlak Prima).
Imam and his personal assistant Miftahul Ulum have been implicated in receiving USD 1.88 million as kickback from the ministry’s grant to KONI.
While Taufik is not implicated in the scandal, KPK is said to believe his input would be crucial in piecing together some of the details in regards to the role of Miftahul.
The case had already seen Ending Fuad Hamidy, the KONI secretary general convicted of corruption charges. He is is currently serving a 32 month prison while Johnny E Awuy, the Treasurer, is serving a 20 month imprisonment.
