
Cheam June Wei and Ng Tze Yong eased into the second round of the Spain Masters badminton championships in Barcelona, but teammate Leong Jun Hao squandered his chances of making the cut.
Jun Hao held two match points in his first round encounter against German’s Max Weisskirchen only to lose 21-16, 16-21, 21-23 in a match that lasted 74 minutes.
In contrast, June Wei took just 25-minutes to defeat Denmark’s Jeppe Bruun 21-9, 21-11 in his opening round match.
June Wei will be up against Sweden’s Felix Burestedt in the second round. June Wei needs another strong display against his eight seeded rival with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.
Tze Yong defeated Estonian 21014, 21-12 to book his second round match-up against second seeded Toma Junior Popov of France.
Meanwhile at the Slovenian International in Maribor it was a strong day for the Malaysian shuttlers in the qualification rounds.
In the men’s singles qualification, Justin Hoh made it into the main draw after notching up three wins on a trot. He started off by beating Slovenian Gregor Alic 21-8, 21-4 and followed it up with a 21-11, 21-16 vicotry over Indonesia’s Aria Dinata before ensuring his progress with a 21-9, 21-9 defeat of Belgium’s Senne Houthoofd.

However, M Fazriq Mohamad Razif’s camapaign came to an end in the final hurdle of the qualification when he was beaten 21-14, 9-21, 12-21 by Indonesian Raynaldi Oktavianur Rizky. Earlier, Fazriq had beaten Hungarian Mark Szent-Andrassy 21-2, 21-12 and Frenchman Gregoire Deschamp 16-21, 21-16, 21-14.
Also in the main draw is Yeoh Seng Zoe, the ninth seed, who opens his campaign against Malta’s Samuel Cassar.
Vasigaran Eveshgaran plays Matthew Abela of Malta in his opening round match.
In the women’s singles qualifications, Siti Nurshuhaini qualified for the main draw after beating the Netherland’s Jaymie Laurens 25-23, 21-15. It was not to be for her teammate Khor Jing Wen, who was beaten 15-21, 15-21 by Ukranian Mariia Stoliarenko.
Siti meets Poland’s Zuzanna Jankowska in the first round of the main draw.
It was three-for-three for the Malaysian men’s doubles, in the qualification rounds.
Justin-Fazriq opened their qualification with a 21-7, 21-12 win over Hungarian’s Zoltan Kereszti-Balazs Papai before defeating Nicolas Hoareau-Lucas Renoir 21-14, 21-16. They play Danes William Kyger Boe-Christian Faust Kjaer in the opening match of the main draw.
As for Beh Chun Meng-Goh Boon Zhe, they received a first round bye and ensured their place in the main draw with a 21-6, 21-11 win over the Slovenian pair of Gregor Alic-Maj Pobolsaj. The Malaysians take on Croatians Igor Cimbur-Zvonimir Durkinjak next.
Junaidi Arif-Muhammad Haikal made it through to the main draw after receiving two walkovers in the qualification rounds. The duo face the might of seventh seeds Andreas Sondergaard-Jesper Toft in the first round.
All three Malaysian mixed doubles competition also made it through to the main draw. Haikal-Low Yeen Yuan edged out Indonesians Patra Harapan Rindorindo-Jessica Maya Rismawardani 17-21, 21-17, 21-17 to advance. The Malaysians play Austrians Simon Bailoni-Lena Rumpold in the main draw.
Chun Meng-Cheng Su Hui had a much easier time against their higher ranked rivals Gasper Krivec-Zoja Novak of Slovenia, winning 21-12, 21-6. They plat another Slovenian pair – Jaka Ivancic-Lia Salehar, in the first round of the main draw.
Boon Zhe-Chen Su Yin started off their qualification campaign with a 21-9, 21-12 win before advancing inot the main draw with a 21-18, 21-17 defeat of Slovenians Domen Lonzaric-Marusa Vracar. Boon Zhe-Su Yin play Slovenians Miha Ivanic-Nika Arih next.
Malaysia will also have Choong Hon Jian-Toh Ee Wei and Tan Kok Xian-Wong Kha Yan in the main draw.
In the women’s singles, Malaysia has three pairs in the main draw – Yeen Yuan-Valerie Siow, Jing Wen-Siti and the Cheng sisters- Su Hui and Su Yin.
Su Hui-Su Yin have already received a bye in the first round of the main draw and will only start their campaign in the second round against Indonesians Mutiara Ayu Puspitasari-Ruzana Ruzana.
