King makes the first move

Defending champion Joelle King of the New Zealand kicked off the restart of international squash with a comprehensive win in the first round of the Manchester Open PSA World Tour event last night.

The world number eight began her defence of the title by handing Latvian Ineta Mackevica a 11-6, 11-7, 11-5 in just 23-minutes.

King, seeded only sixth this time, will play England’s Lucy Turmel in the next round. Turmel, ranked 37 in the world, upset Egypt’s world number 19 Nada Abbas 12-10, 13-11, 9-11, 11-6 after a 55-minute battle.

Top seed France’s Camille Serme held off a resurgent Sabrina Sobhy of the USA to book her place in the second round. Her 11-5, 8-11, 11-6, 11-6 victory will see her taking on Belgium’s Belgium’s Nele Gilis in the last 16.

Serme’s compatriot Coline Aumard also booked her place in the next round with a 11-9, 11-9, 11-7 win over Egypt’s Hana Ramadan.

The Egyptian trio Hania El Hammamy, Salma Hany and Nadine Shahin were all victorious over France’s Enora Villard and Melissa Alves, and Canada’s Danielle Letourneau respectively in their opening round matches.

In the men’s competition, world number one ranked Egyptian Mohamed ElShorbagy packed off Germany’s Raphael Kandra 11-8, 11-5, 11-8 in his opening round match.

He will play England’s former world number one James Willstrop for a place in the quarter finals. Wilstrop made light work of Pakistan’s Tayyab Aslam 11-3, 11-1, 11-1  in just 23 minutes to book his place in the second round.

World Champion Tarek Momen also got his campaign to a winning start with a 8-11, 11-8, 11-6, 11-9 victory over Qatar’s Abdulla Mohd Al Tamimi.
