There may be more than 500 gold medals at stake at the ongoing Manila SEA Games, but none can be as emotional as the two won by Edgar Marvelo Xavier in wushu today.
The Indonesia world champion was competing for the gold just hours after finding out that his beloved dad has passed on.
His father Lo Tjhiang Meng passed away at 1.00am today and Edgar was due to contest in two events, with the first event starting at 9.00am.
Putting aside his grief, Edgar went on to finish ahead of Singapore’s Jowen Lim and Vietnam’s Tran Xuan Huep for the daoshu/gunshu combined gold medal.
The eldest of four siblings, went on to clinch the team duilian event gold with teammates Seraf Naro Siregar and Harris Horatius.
While his victories were celebrated by all of Indonesia, the death of his father could not have come at a worse time. He is unable to return home immediately after the event because of the bad weather in Manila caused by Typhoon Kammuri (Tisoy). The earliest flight that he can expect to catch is tomorrow morning.
The bad news also comes just three days before Edgar celebrates his 21st birthday on Dec 6. His fathers funeral is now scheduled to be held on Dec 7.
Instead of celebrating his golden feat and birthday, Edgar will now have to bid farewell to his father.
