
India’s top seeded Meiraba Luwang denied Muhammad Fazriq Mohamed Razif a place in the men’s singles finals at the Bangladesh Junior International Series badminton championships in Dhaka.
Also crashing out was second seeded Tan Zhing Yi, suffering a 14-21, 18-21 defeat to Thailand’s Krittaporn Jiantanet in the women’s singles semi-finals.
However, Malaysia will still have a representative in the men’s singles final with Ong Ken Yon gunning down India’s R Vikash Prabhu 21-9, 21-10 in his semi-final tie. Ken Yon took just 21 minutes to dismantle Vikash, who had taken the scalp of Asian Junior champion Justin Hoh in the quarter-finals.
In contrast, Fazriq battled for more than an hour before bowing out 17-21, 21-14, 15-21 to Meirabain his semi-final match.
Fazriq, however, can still walk away with a title if he and his partner Justin can beat teammates Eogene Ewe Eon-Ong Zhen Yi in the men’s doubles final.
Fazriq-Justin overcame India’s Vikash-Arun Karthik K 21-15, 21-11 in the semi-finals while Eogene-Zhen Yi moved into the final without liftig their racquets. The duo were given a walkover by teammates Beh Chun Meng-Goh Boon Zhe in the semi-finals.
With Chun Meng, unfit to play, he and his mixed doubles partner Chen Su Hui were also forced to withdraw from their semi-finals against teammates Jack Chong Ee-Odelia Wong Qiao Shi. Chun Meng-Su Hui were the top seeds in the mixed doubles competition.
Jack-Odelia will take on the winner of the all-Malaysian semi-final tie between Boon Zhe-Su Yin and Ken Yon-Zhing Yi.
Despite the disappointment in the mixed doubles, Su Hui and partner Chen Su Yin, seeded second in the women’s doubles, are through to the finals. The pair defeated Thailand’s Jiantanet-Kanyanat Sudchoeichom 21-14, 21-13 in the semi-finals.
The Malaysian pair are favoured to lift the title, playing Nepal’s Jessica Gurung-Rasila Maharjan in the final.
