
Malaysia are on the verge of claiming two titles at the Slovenia International badminton championships in Maribor.
Low Yeen Yuan-Valeree Siow continued their fine run with another seeded rival to book their place in the women’s doubles final.
The Malaysian duo had beaten second seeds Alzbeta Basova-Miceala Fuchsova of the Czech Republic in the quarter-finals, and followed it up today with a win over eighth seeds Mariia Stoliarenko-Yelyzaveta Zharka of the Ukraine.
The Malaysian pair came from losing the first game to carve out a 13-21, 21-13,
It could well have been an all-Malaysian final, but sisters Cheng Su Hui-Cheng Su Yin could not find the extra edge in final stretch of their semi-final against third seeds Isabella Nielsen-Marie Louise Steffensen of Denmark.
Despite on even ground at 19-19 in the deciding game, the Malaysian pair were unable to take advantage as they lost the semi-final tie 21-15, 17-21, 19-21.
The mixed doubles pairing of Chong Hon Jian-Toh Ee Wei overcame the Danish Swedish scratch pairing of Kristoffer Knudsen-Malena Norrman 23-21, 21-17 in the semi-finals.
The eighth seeded scratch pair had beaten top seeded Philip Barker-Katharina Hochmeir of Austria in the quarter-finals and were favoured to make the finals. But Hon Jian-Ee Wei after a close first game, edged out their rivals after a 31-minute battle.
They play Indonesians Muh Putra Erwiansyah-Sofy Al Mushira Asharunnisa in the final.
Erwiansyah was the bane for the Malaysians in the men’s doubles as well as he and partner Patra Harapan Rindorindo combined to end the run of Beh Chung Meng-Goh Boon Sze in the semi-finals with a 21-9, 21-18 win.
Earlier in the women’s singles, Siti Nurshuhaini succumbed to a 15-21, 17-21 defeat at the hands of Indonesian Mutiara Ayu Puspitasari.
