Third seed Didin Taresoh hopes of making the knockout stages of the Spanish Para Badminton International is in tenterhooks after he was beaten in his second group match.
Didin, who was expected to top Group C, was beaten 17-21, 18-21 by Isaak Galglish of England in the men’s singles SH6 category.
The defeat puts Didin in a do-or-die mission against Spaniard Ivan Segura Escobar and also hope for the outcome of the match between Dalglish and Ireland’s Niall Mcveigh to favour him.
After the first two rounds of the group stages, Isaak tops the table with four points ahead of both Didin and Mcveigh, who have two points each.
Didin now needs to win his final group match and hope that Dalglish defeats McVeigh to make the quarter-final stages.
But the records show that McVeigh has beaten Dalglish in their only previous meeting at the European Para Badminton Championships in 2016.
If McVeigh emerges triumphant, all three players would be tied on four points each, and the two qualifiers from the group would be decided on countback.
As it stands Isaak has an 84-59 point difference with Didin at 77-70 and McVeigh at 70-59.
Muhammad Ikhwan Ramli, who had already qualified for the knockout stages of the men’s singles WH 1 category, ensured that he would top Group F.
Ikhwan, who opened his campaign by defeating Thailand’s Jakarin Homhual in his opening match, defeated Russian Yuri Stepanov 21-15, 21-6 in his second group tie.
He will be up against Czech Republic’s Jan Matousek in the first round of the knockout stages. The Dubai Para Badminton champion, who is seeded joint fifth, has never met Matousek in any previous competitions.
The third Malaysian at the championships, men’s singles SU5 top seed Cheah Liek Hou had already booked his place in the knockout stages and will play Taiwanese Fang Jen-yu in the top of the table Group A clash later today.
