Wong Chun Ting at 2019 ITTF World Tour Austrian Open
Hong Kong’s Wong Chung Ting is likely to benefit from the suspension of the China’s Wang Chuqin by gaining a spot in the ITTF World Tour Grand Final in Zhengzhou next month.
Chun Ting only managed to finish 17th in the overall standings, just one short of an automatic qualifying spot. But with Chuqin, who is in seventh spot, suspended for indiscipline, Chun Ting is almost certain of taking the vacant spot.
Chuqiin was suspended after he expressed his anger by slamming his racket on the table, after losing his match against compatriot Zhao Zihao in the preliminary rounds of the recent Austrian Open.
He was ordered home and suspended until February next year. Unless the Chinese authorities gives him a reprieve, Chun Ting would start in the year ending tournament in Zhengzhao.
His win over Chuqin and subsequent progress in the tournament allowed Zihao to book a place in the Grand Finals, that seemed too far off before Austria.
Of the 16 qualifiers for the men’s singles, seven would be Chinese players, including the top four ranked qualifiers – Xu Xin, Fan Zhendong, Lin Gaoyuan and veteran Ma Long. The highest ranked non-Chinese qualifier is Japan’s Tomokazu Harimoto while Brazilian Hugo Calderano is the highest non-Asian qualifier at number nine, just ahead of German’s Timo Boll.
Like the men’s singles, the women’s singles competition is also dominated by Chinese players with 10 of the 16 qualifiers coming from China. Nineteen year old Chinese ace Sun Yingsha heads the list ahead of another teenager Mima Ito of Japan.
Ito, the newly crowned Austrian Open champion is one of the four Japanese qualifier for the Grand Finals. Singapore’s Feng Tianwei and Chinese Taipei’s Cheng I-Ching make up the list of qualifiers.
