
Defending jiangshu champion Wong Weng Son was dethroned at the World Wushu Championships in Shanghai today.
Weng Son, who won the gold two years ago in Kazan, could only finish second this time around behind home favourite Li Qizhen. The Chinese exponent collected 9.710 poinst to edge out a disappointed Weng Son, who managed only a 9.636 mark.
Weng Son was beaten by Indonesian Marvelo Edgar Xavier by a mere 0.007 points in the men’s changquan event earlier in the morning.
The Negri Sembilan-born Weng Son finished ahead of Macau’s Song Chi Kuan.

In the men’s nangun event, Malaysia’s Chuah Sangyang finished in a lowly 21st position, amassing only 9.100 points for his routine.
Shangyang had won the xingyiquan event yesterday and much was expected of him in the nangun.
The Malaysian had won the nangun gold at the 2016 World Junior Wushu Championships, but he was not in his elements this time around.
Chinese Taipei’s Lai Po Wei took the gold with 9.673 points ahead by a whisker from Macau’s Huang Jun Hua. Jun Hua lost out on the gold by 0.003 points after being awarded a 9.670 score. Indonesia’s Horatius Harris took the bronze.
It was also a poor outing for former world champion Phoon Eyin. The 2018 Taolu World Cup jianshu gold medallist, only managed a 9.373 to finish in 9th spot.
Eyin was a a member of the tea that won the duilian gold i Kazan two years ago.
Macau’s Li Yi was crowned the champion in the women’s qiangshu with 9.636 points, ahead of Vietnam’s Duong Thuy Vi (9.593) and Ukraine’s Temna Liudmyla (9.570)
