Sabahan Arena Satu Samin bagged the women’s singles Under-17 title at the Singapore Youth International Series as Malaysia end the competition with three titles.
Malaysia also clinched the men’s singles Under-15 title through Eogene Ewe Eon while the doubles pair of Choi Jian Sheng-Wong Vin Sean won the men’s doubles Under-17 crown.
Arena defeated a resurgent Japan’s Ishioka Sora 21-16, 25-23 for her maiden junior international title. She was eliminated in the second round at the World Junior Championships earlier this year as well as at the Malaysia Junior International Challenge in August.
Earlier on Saturday, the eight seed had gunned down Hong Kong’s Happy Serena Cheng Sin Yan 17-21, 21-14, 21-15.
Eogene came back from a game down to upset Indonesian sixth seed Bodhi Ratana Teja Gotama 16-21, 21-11, 21-17. The 14-year-old who hails from Penang, had also won the U-15 Daihatsu Astec Open in Jakarta earlier this month.
Eogene, who had beaten Japan’s Yudai Okimoto in the semi-finals, was also a semi-finalist in the doubles. He and his partner Ramno Ferdinan were, however, beaten in the semi-finals by Indonesian’s Jonathan Farrell Gosal-Adrian Pratama 21-18, 18-21, 18-21.
Jian Sheng-Vin Sea accounted for Indonesia’s Michael-Ghoffar Imam Prasojo 21-13, 23-21 for the under-17 doubles crown. It is the pairs first international title of the year, having been eliminated in the early rounds in all of their previous international outings this year. The pair edged out another Indonesian pair – Muhammad Gibran Arfiansyah-Gerardo Rizqullah Hafidz 21018, 20-22, 21-10 in the semi-finals.
Malaysia had a number of others bowing out in the semi-final stages itself.
In the men’s U-19 category, Ling Wei Jie-Yong Jing Ren were beaten 17-21, 21-15, 19-21 by Singapore’s Wesley Koh Eng Keat-Junsuke Kubo in the men’s doubles semi-finals.
In the under-17 competition, the men’s doubles pair of Ng Tze Chian-Wong Chuan Chui lost to Michael-Ghoffar 12-21, 17-21.
Jeremy Bryan-Low Han Chen were handed a 13-21, 21-10, 20-22 heartbreak by India’s Lokesh Reddy Kalagotla-Ankit Mondal in the men’s doubles Under-15 semi-finals.
Lee Wen Jin-Ethan Joon Hui Oh were beaten 12-21, 11-21 by another Indian pair Pranauv Ram Nagalinga-Sai Prasad Teegala in the men’s doubles Under-13 semi-finals.
